Somatic Psychotherapy for Women | Body-Mind Connection
Your body has been trying to tell you something. It’s time to actually listen.
You already know what’s wrong. You’ve talked about it in therapy for years – maybe decades. You understand your patterns intellectually, maybe you can trace them back to your childhood, your mom, your ex, your church. And yet…you still feel it in your chest when you get a certain kind of email. Your body still goes cold in conflict. You still find yourself saying yes when every cell in you is screaming no.
That gap – between knowing and actually feeling different – is exactly what somatic psychotherapy is designed to close.
What Is Somatic Psychotherapy?
Somatic psychotherapy is a body-based approach to healing that works with your nervous system, not just your thoughts. The word “somatic” comes from the Greek word “soma” for body — and the premise is simple: your body holds your history and connection. Trauma, grief, stress, and unresolved emotion don’t just live in your memories. They live in your muscle memory, your posture, your breathing patterns, your gut.
Traditional talk therapy helps you understand your story. Somatic therapy helps you complete it – by working with the physical sensations, impulses, and patterns that get stuck in your body when something overwhelming happens and there’s no safe way to process it at the time.
Think of it as updating the software your nervous system is still running from 1987.
How I Use Somatic Work With Clients
I’ve been doing this long enough to know that insight alone doesn’t heal people. If it did, therapists would be out of business. Clients are smart, self-aware people who read all the books and still feel stuck. So in our work together, I blend evidence-based somatic techniques with the parts of you that think, feel, and yes, sometimes need to swear a little.
In practice, this might look like pausing mid-session to notice what’s happening in your body when you’re describing something upsetting. Where do you feel it? What’s the sensation – tight, numb, buzzing, hollow? What does your body want to do in that moment that it wasn’t allowed to do then?
We might work with breath, movement, grounding exercises, or simply slowing down enough to let your nervous system catch up with your insights. I don’t push. We don’t force. We follow what’s already trying to move in you.
What Somatic Therapy Can Help With
Somatic psychotherapy is particularly effective for women navigating:
- Trauma and complex PTSD – including childhood trauma, religious trauma, relationship trauma, and medical trauma.
- Anxiety that lives in the body – the racing heart, the tight chest, the hypervigilance that doesn’t switch off even when you know you’re safe.
- Grief and loss – divorce, death, infertility, estrangement, the loss of who you thought you were going to be.
- Peri-menopause and menopause – when your body is going through massive change, your nervous system is already on high alert, and you stop recognizing yourself.
- Self-abandonment patterns – the tendency to disconnect or numb out from your own needs, sensations, and instincts in order to manage relationships or survive environments that didn’t feel safe.
What to Expect in Our Sessions
Sessions are 55 minutes, held virtually, and self-pay at $180 per session. You don’t need to have done somatic work before – I’ll guide you through everything. What you do need is a willingness to slow down, get curious about your inner experience, and tolerate a little discomfort in service of real change.
I am licensed in Indiana, California, and Texas, and I work exclusively with women over 40. Not because younger women don’t deserve good therapy – they do, and I do have some clients in their 30s – but because the specific terrain of midlife requires someone who’s been in it, who isn’t going to pathologize your rage or your grief or your refusal to keep shrinking.
This Work Is For You If…
You’ve done traditional therapy and found it lacking. You understand yourself intellectually but can’t seem to change how you feel or react. You’re exhausted by performing okayness. You want to heal at a level that’s deeper than words. You’re ready to stop abandoning yourself.
